Does my child need orthotics? Shoes are worn on the sides.

My child has flat feet...

My child's shoes get worn down on the outside...

My child stumbles and trips frequently...

Of the last 3 sentences, only the latter one (about stumbling) has any merit for concern.

There are no studies that show orthotics will fix flat feet. If there are no symptoms associated with flat feet, do not worry about it. Around the age of 6-9 the arch of the foot becomes more visible.

If you would like to try something then consider an over the counter orthotic. I usually advise patients to obtain SuperFeet (REI and Sports Chalet carry them for sure)

If your child frequently falls then he/she should be evaluated by a physician.

Another reason to consider an orthotic would be frequent pain in the feet with long walking or playing.

Most common reason why the shoes are worn down on the outside is due to regular gait pattern. There is nothing wrong with wearing down the shoes as long as there is no pain associated with it. Just get a new pair of shoes after they have been worn down.

If you have other question you can contact me at the office or schedule an appointment.
